Glen goes Great Guns for charity.... mate
Sunday 18th September and my alarm goes off at 5am. Most people my age are just coming in from a night out whilst I am having to get up and don my lucky Leeds United shorts and get my running shoes on!
It was Great North Run time again…… I stood on the starting line at 11am surrounded by a multitude of bright charity vests and fancy dress outfits. After a gentle warm up led by a very enthusiastic personal trainer it was time for the off.
1 mile in: I was making good progress and passed a man running with a fridge on his back.
2 miles in: I passed a man in a full banana outfit with ease.
After 3 miles I was thinking “this is too easy”….
…I thought too soon. At the 11th mile marker it felt like someone had played a cruel joke and made the 10th mile twice as long! Somehow I managed to get round in a time of 1 hour 47 minutes (beating last year’s time by 10 minutes I might add) and instantly said “NEVER AGAIN!”… I quickly forgot how painful it was and put my name forward for next year.
My nominated charity this year was the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and as of today I have managed to achieve my £300 target. Having said that there is still time to donate :-)
If you are feeling charitable please visit www.justgiving.com/glenrenton, any donation however small would be gratefully received!
Keep on running,
