The Brief

Creative Communications agency CreativeRace has some of the biggest names in retail on their client list, so it was imperative that their new workplace reflected their capabilities and cutting-edge status.

Rapid, organic growth meant the existing premises could not accommodate increased staff numbers and had little cohesion in terms of overall design and functionality. High levels of visitors added pressure to an already busy and distracting space.

It was important to cater for a range of functions within the design, from team collaboration to focussed work, whilst reinforcing the company’s creative ethos. Streamlining staff interaction and improving efficiency were high on the agenda. After a successful bid, Ben Johnson Interiors was appointed by the client to manage their office relocation to No1 Leeds.

The Solution

The CAT B fit-out contract included new partitioning, flooring, breakout/tea point areas, joinery, and alterations to the existing and new M & E services over two floors. The existing CAT A fit-out included perforated ceiling tiles which offered limited acoustic privacy. Improved performance was achieved by added sound attenuation to the ventilation system and acoustic quilt above all the partitioning. Where further confidentiality was required some rooms were constructed using 200mm sound block partitioning.  At the extreme end of acoustic performance requirements (the editing suite) slab to slab partitioning was used.

Gratterpalm chose to separate their client-facing reception and meeting rooms from the main working office on the first floor thereby minimising disruptions for the workforce. A central reception desk with circular flooring detail, suspended lighting and feature graphics was the focus of this area. Meeting rooms orientate around the reception, and with the absence of natural light were fully glazed with transparent vinyl pro gloss graphics applied.

Following a successful tender bid, Ben Johnson demonstrated a great flexible attitude, working with the project team to value engineer the original scheme to meet the client’s target budget. The project was a 7 week programme and was completed on time to budget with minor snagging on completion. I hope to have the pleasure of working with Ben Johnson Interiors again on other office schemes.
