Unilever 'Aladdin' : Phase 1

Consumer Centre
Sector: Manufacturing
Location: Leeds
Scope of Works: Design, Fit-Out, Furniture Installation

The Brief:
Ben Johnson tendered and subsequently won the project to complete a five million pound refurbishment of Unilever’s global head office for deodorants R&D. As well as a total refurbishment of the building the design was to introduce new ways of working whilst providing a more flexible and creative working environment. Phase one is the Consumer area where consumers assist with testing and review of new products.

The Challenges:
The buildings tipped for refurbishment will be occupied throughout the life of the project so works are split into six phases to maintain business continuity.
Unilever maintain strict health & safety requirements on site – these have to be adhered to at all times.

The Solution:
The design required two very different solutions for the interior. Consumer testing facilities had to be very clinical providing a controlled environment for product testing, whilst the other “review” facility had to be very homely, providing a relaxed environment for consumers to come together and discuss their findings. Ben Johnson undertook the design and fit-out which included ceilings, partitions, decoration/graphics, floor finishes and extensive bespoke joinery. Phase one was completed on budget and on time.
