The Client:
Covea Insurance Plc is a UK underwriting business (of the leading French mutual insurance group Covéa), handling the insurance needs of over 1.3 million policyholders, across its motor, household, protection, mid and high net worth, and a range of commercial insurance products.


The Brief:
Ben Johnson were appointed to deliver c.700 workstations for Covéa Insurance’s new office at A & B Mill Dean Clough, Halifax


The Challenges:

  • Working with Covéa Insurance and the project team to deliver their vision for the building within the desired budget
  • Managing a phased install within a tight programme
    Identifying areas where c. 200 existing desk frames could be re-used with new tops
  • As a renovated mill, Dean Clough has some unusually shaped meeting rooms in the tower sections where furniture needed to be incorporated


The Solution:
Pilot samples were installed at the client’s existing premises for user feedback. Ben Johnson also invited the client to visit various manufacturers showrooms to help the client visualise their requirements.
Ben Johnson developed several bespoke meeting tables to maximise the space in the tower sections of A & B Mill. Solutions included a large Squarial Table and a “statement” veneer barrelled table for the boardroom.
The Covéa Insurance design scheme included a variety of meeting rooms. From a flexible training facility with a bi-folding wall to a range of general meeting rooms seating 4-12 people. Ben Johnson found practical solutions for each room that matched the open plan bench workstations.
Covéa Insurance picked the Strata Oak finish from Senator, a unique MFC which brought out the warm detailing in the exposed brickwork
With over 700 employees, a large breakout area was essential to accommodate staff breaks as well as informal breakout on each floor for team meetings.

Our ideal was to use a local supplier who could support us during the project and also provide the day 2 support once the project was complete. The Ben Johnson team helped us from the outset to define the furniture specification through providing samples and arranging showroom visits
They were reactive to our ever changing needs as we aimed to make the most practical use of space possible, balanced with the overarching look and feel of the new office renovation
