Unilever

Sector: Manufacturing
Location: Leeds
Scope of Works: Principal Contractor, Design, Fit Out, Furniture Installation

The Brief:
The challenge was to provide a facility that would truly make a difference to the working day of Unilever’s employees. Ben Johnson were successful in securing this tendered project on a Design and Build basis. Operating as the designer from the very early stages of the project’s development, we provided the link between the various disciplines, undertaking the statutory submissions and subsequently operating as the Principal Contractor throughout the fit-out phase of the project.

The Solution:
To achieve the above brief, two existing buildings were linked with a large glass atrium, creating an entirely new entrance to the production lines and a modern and spacious break-out area. This multi-function area serves to introduce natural light into previously dark and insular manufacturing areas. Other facilities include new toilets and locker rooms.

The project was delivered on time, on budget and to the highest standard.

Project Viscount is just one part of Unilever’s “Project Pride” scheme to improve working conditions for staff, and provide facilities that match up to a world-renowned brand. Accordingly, any contractor must be able to meet an exceptionally high standard of project management, health and safety, and finish, and the Ben Johnson team do this every time.

Problems inevitably arise in any project, but these are always raised with an accompanying solution. The guys on site are not afraid to challenge the norm and present alternative ways of doing things.

With the team’s level of commitment and attention to detail, the end-product fulfilled all our expectations from concept design right through to delivery. It surpasses any other on-site facility that Unilever has in the UK.
