What are the prospects for the property sector in Yorkshire?
Last year was a record year for Ben Johnson Interiors and we have seen a strong first quarter which I believe is echoed across the property sector. My concern is that there could now be a temporary slowdown with the uncertain political climate, but only time will tell.
What is the best project you have been involved in?
Project “Aladdin” for Unilever has been one of those “stand-out” projects that don’t happen every day. The Unilever facility in Leeds is the largest deodorant production facility in the UK. For many years the Leeds site has been known as a technology centre, but has now developed into a global design centre and the building had to be refurbished to reflect the status.
What is your favourite building in the region?
I really love Dean Clough Mill in Halifax – a great example of how a historical mill can be regenerated.
If you could change one thing to improve the property industry, what would it be?
Improve the interface between the utility companies and the property industry in terms of lead-times and co-ordination to get the appropriate infrastructures in place, particularly for new builds.
Whom do you admire most in the Yorkshire property industry?
I admire the developers who are pushing the boundaries in terms of exciting new workspaces.
