A great year for Ben Johnson Interiors

Ben Johnson Interiors have created some amazing spaces in 2018.

Here are a few comments from very happy clients – now based in their exceptional workplaces – from popular baby brand Tommee Tippee in the North East, to the Football Association (FA) in Leeds, i-view in Leeds and Sweco Engineering Consultants in Glasgow, Scotland.

“We are delighted and proud of our new HQ.”

“Our experience of Ben Johnson Interiors has been nothing but positive…”

“Ben Johnson Interiors’ expertise and fitting has been exceptional.”

“We are a very happy client.”

What particularly pleases the Ben Johnson Interiors team, is that many clients return to us year after year for ongoing workplace design and build.  We believe returning clients are a ringing endorsement of our great creative results, professionalism and outstanding client care throughout all our projects.

Ben Johnson Interiors has well and truly made its mark on the North East of England in 2018 and we have enjoyed a record year in this region.

Notable highlights in the North East include Tangent Marketing Services, a creative marketing and technology agency who were looking for a “high quality but different” look to be completed in a very tight time frame, while the employees were still in situ.  To help the Tangent team decide on the look, we took them to London to visit several of our manufacturers’ showrooms to view the feature partitioning, furniture and kitchen specifications. We also arranged visits to our clients’ existing workspaces, so they could see our designs working in real life. The end result was exactly what they wanted.  Their Director of Service, Helen Oliver said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the end result (as is our Chairman) and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Ben Johnson Interiors for their outstanding work…”

The 30,000 sq ft global HQ for Mayborn Group, owners of Tommee Tippee, was another North East coup in 2018. We worked closely with Mayborn Group to design and build a stunning HQ poised for the future. We installed our first office “swing” and also planted an indoor tree! The completed workplace offers the 170-strong HQ team lots of choice, comfort and autonomy in the way they work. The whole concept of the interior design supports collaborative working and encourages creativity and expression. It’s now routinely described as one of the “coolest offices to work in the North East”.

In 2018, we’re happy to say that news of  Ben Johnson Interiors’ outstanding design and build work is clearly travelling. Although we’re currently based in Yorkshire and the North East, we delivered over £1 million of projects outside of this region, from London to Scotland.

Ben Johnson Interiors has worked with giant engineering, architectural and construction consultancy Sweco for many years. We recently completed a full workplace analysis, design and build project for them in Scotland. The company had outgrown their Glasgow office and the workplace no longer appeared to offer them the mix of vitality, focus and collaborative spaces they needed.

Ben Johnson Interiors developed two new design concepts for Sweco which were presented, and employee comments invited. All remarks were reviewed and where appropriate, incorporated within the new design. Within just nine weeks, the project was delivered on time and to budget. The Project Manager for Sweco said: “We are so happy with our new office space. It is exactly what we needed.”

The design and build of our first ever bar was a first for 2018.  We worked with West Riding FA in Leeds, the governing body of football in West Yorkshire, to give them an interior face-lift. The FA had upgraded to a 3G all-weather pitch two years previously, and although the exterior features were now tip-top and attracting top teams and visitors, the interior space was in need of an urgent upgrade to match.  Enter Ben Johnson Interiors, who brought function rooms, common areas, staff kitchen, accessibility and security bang up to date.  We were thrilled to design and install a trendy contemporary bar with LED lighting and concrete effect laminates which replaces the former old-fashioned, 70s style version.

Award-winning i-view brought their UK first viewing facility outside London to Leeds in 2018 and chose Ben Johnson Interiors to design and build the extremely “high spec – high tech” interior. Viewing studios are frequently used by market researchers to discreetly observe and listen to focus groups and potential consumers through a one-way mirror.  This way, they can capture genuine perceptions, opinions and attitudes towards a product, service, advertisement, packaging or concept.

This new, state of the art viewing facility has superb, floor-to-ceiling views over Leeds city centre.  It is equipped with all the very latest digital tech for UX testing, dial testing, eye-tracking, digital observation, emotional testing and neuromarketing. There are three spacious bespoke studios with client viewing rooms, as well as event space for up to 75 delegates, co-working space and a superb business lounge in the building.

Ben Johnson Interior’s Marketing Director, Emma Dodsley says: “We are proud that i-view chose to work with Ben Johnson Interiors for its first UK viewing facility outside London. It is generally considered that the more comfortable a person feels with their environment during a focus group or depth interview, the better responses they will give, and this will lead to more accurate research. Hence the importance that i-view has given to the perfect interior design.”

In terms of our people, we were delighted to see Clare Bodak from our North East region, return from maternity leave in great form, and we were very pleased to welcome Andy Shaw as highly enthusiastic and popular Design & Build Consultant to our Yorkshire region.  Otherwise staff retention in Ben Johnson Interiors this year has been 100%.

A new, improved  Ben Johnson Interiors website has resulted in greatly enhanced engagement with our audience and we have attained some impressive PR press coverage this year. Ben Johnson Interiors’ work has frequently been featured in the business pages of the Yorkshire Post; The Newcastle Journal; Northern Echo; numerous trade magazines including Practical Facilities Management and Cabinet Maker and national business publication Channel Info. A three-page feature is due to appear in Facilities Management Journal at the time of writing.

As if all these achievements weren’t enough,  in 2018 we were shortlisted for two prestigious awards – the Northern Design Awards (NDA) and the Finishes and Interiors Sector awards (FIS) and will be entering the Business Insider Awards in 2019. Watch this space!

Many thanks to our wonderful teams of talented, hardworking people, colleagues, contacts and clients for their contribution to a phenomenal year. All the very best to everyone for 2019!
