RTC North

The Brief

RTC North is one of Europe’s leading technology transfer companies with a trusted reputation for delivering services in innovation and business to individuals, businesses and the public sector.

Ben Johnson interiors were approached by RTC North to space plan the interior layout of a 20,000 sq. ft. two-storey office space, which would become their new North East HQ. The accommodation requirements included a high-quality space to host training and events and executive workspace for professional service companies.

With a three year build programme of a new bridge in Sunderland already underway and a stone’s throw away from RTC North’s existing premises, the client had already made the decision to relocate further down the river to minimise disruption to the business. It was important that we worked at speed to design and build the first phase which would house RTC North’s central service, project teams and industry clusters, making the move possible within a limited time frame.

The Solution

The ground floor consists of a functional reception area with a new modular desk and soft seating -upholstered in bold brand colours, bringing personality to the space. RTC North’s workspace, was designed in an open plan arrangement, including breakout spaces using high back sofas and a contemporary tea point facility with a breakfast bar and high-level seating. There are of a range of lettable meeting rooms in the core area, varying in sizes.

The space also includes a large flexible training and open event space with a bi-folding central wall and the potential to hold 100+ people. Flexibility is not only considered within the build of the space but also within the furniture specified for example the smart ‘Meet’ table by Sedus. The top of the ‘Meet’ standing table folds down so it stacks neatly when not required. It can also be combined with ‘Meet’ Table over easy panel to allow several people to gather around, which encourages informal communication and networking.
