Spectrum Vaccination Centre

The Brief

We were contacted by Spectrum in late summer 2020 regarding the prospect of Spectrum Vaccination Centre, a large-scale vaccination centre in central Wakefield, the first of its kind in West Yorkshire and driven by the NHS’ and Government’s vaccination programme.

Needless to say, with the ever-evolving nature of the pandemic, the brief was fluid as more information came in, so both flexibility and quick responses were crucial to the successful delivery of the project.

Spectrum tasked Ben Johnson with helping to design and fit-out a leading vaccination centre that had the potential to deliver a high volume of COVID-19 vaccinations per week.

Being a public-facing health provision in the middle of a global pandemic, there were significant health and safety considerations for this project, including a deep understanding of flow, clear routes through the building and separate W/C facilities for staff and visitors, amongst other complex requirements.

The Solution

Our team spoke at length with the client around the diverse requirements of the large-scale Vaccination Centre, looking to understand their priorities and concerns so these could be addressed during conceptualisation.

Our design mapped out clear routes through the building, introduced passing places and separate facilities for staff and visitors, adhered to very specific NHS guidelines with regard to the vaccination bays, as well as delivering on the need for an on-site Pharmacy.

In addition, we implemented sterile finishes throughout the centre, such as safety flooring, anti-microbial coverings and easy-to-clean and maintain furniture throughout the space. Signage was also key, giving clear guidelines to visitors and staff to avoid footfall traffic and to ensure the flow of visitors remained in one direction.

In total, the project took just 12 weeks to complete and the centre opened in January 2021.

The Finished Project

This was a really special and inspiring project to be a part of and we’re so proud to have played a role in the UK’s efforts against the coronavirus pandemic, in our own way.

The vaccination centre has now serviced and delivered vaccines to thousands of people to date during the UK’s vital vaccine rollout, and continues to do so.
