The Brief

SY4 Security was initially a management buyout of BAE Systems’ Applied Intelligence Managed Security Service.  Ben Johnson Interiors were introduced to the client as a design and build company that had experience of their chosen building at Marshall Mills. The brief was to create a space that reflected their new brand identity as a leading technology company in the cyber security sector. Secure separation between the client areas and work areas was key with a viewing window in the boardroom to allow the team to present the working office. The design had to be in keeping with the building in terms of style and finish. A team of 45 employees work out of the Leeds office

The Solution

For the final design, the space is split into two distinct areas: front of house – kitchen/breakout, boardroom, and meeting room & secure office area – desking and storage including project space/breakout – accessible via a security fob provided by Ben Johnson.

A client boardroom and meeting room were created from a mixture of solid and glazed partitioning.

The client boardroom incorporated a two-way window with intelligent glazing that could be made either transparent or opaque so SY4 could demonstrate the working team beyond, and control the potential exposure of commercially sensitive data.

Ben Johnson considered and presented a few different desking shapes for the client. SY4 chose a 120-degree pentagon desking system which allowed the team to be in pods of three, with no one directly adjacent to them to enable concentration but also collaboration if necessary.

Whiteboard walls were added to the project meeting room and boardroom to facilitate and support collaboration.

An informal, kitchen breakout area was designed and installed to support client and team breaks.

Ben Johnson Interiors provided design service, fit-out and furniture supply. The fit-out included partitioning, and flooring as well as mechanical and electrical services.

The Finished Project

This project created a secure, functional and collaborative workspace tailored to SY4’s needs. The layout clearly divides front-of-house areas—including a kitchen breakout, boardroom and meeting room—from a fob-accessed secure office with desking, storage and project space. A mix of solid and glazed partitions defines spaces while maintaining light, with intelligent two-way glazing in the boardroom allowing controlled visibility into the working team. The 120-degree pentagon desking system supports focused work within small collaborative pods, complemented by whiteboard walls to encourage idea sharing. Ben Johnson Interiors delivered the full design, fit-out and furniture solution, resulting in a cohesive and adaptable workplace.
