The Brief

The Spa Medica team were looking to expand their reach to offer their exceptional service within the Blackpool area. Their new facility was an office building across 2 floors, and the Ben Johnson team were appointed to transform both floors, including creating a bespoke surgery space for operations to be performed.

The Spa Medica fitouts can range in complexity, and understanding the mechanical and electrical requirements is essential. Our experienced team included design partner, This Is Interiors with their space planning and healthcare design expertise, together with a specialist mechanical and electrical consultant.

The Solution

The finished ground floor of Spa Medica Blackpool offers a welcoming reception area for patients, a pre operation and discharge room, as well as a fully equipped theatre/surgical suite where all minor surgeries take place. There is also a dedicated ward area for patients to sit before entering the pre operation room.

Wall finishes, ceilings and flooring were also selected and installed with hygiene, durability and performance in mind in all surgical areas. Other areas of focus within the design and build were fire safety, an uninterrupted electrical supply for medical equipment, adequate ventilation, heating, and cooling for all treatment rooms and the theatre.

When completing the fit-out of the ground floor space, we also fit-out and furnished two office areas which included patient record storage, and workstations for staff. The ground floor also accommodates further storage, a dirty utility area, toilets and a unisex changing room.

The first floor houses a second independent reception area and the optometrist. The optometry clinic had to be space planned to accommodate large specialist machinery as well as a basin, treatment chair and a desk for the consultant. In addition, the first floor consists of cellular consultation rooms, a pharmacy, a large stockroom, a diagnostics room for optical equipment, an optometrist’s back office, toilets, and a breakout area.

The Finished Project

The new facility is spread out across 2 floors with 2 individual reception area’s to separate the diagnostics from the theatre operations, giving patients a clear understanding of which floor they need to visit depending on which service they require on the day. Both reception areas include a reception desk with a backdrop of a feature grey wall which incorporates the Spa Medica branding. The desks were designed to be hard wearing and have a walnut finish, it was also vital that the reception desks were DDA compliant, meaning a section of the desk was lowered to 750mm to ensure everyone could be welcomed in to the space. Similarly to the reception areas, both WC’s meet all building regulations and are DDA compliant.
