Corporate Social Responsibility

At Ben Johnson we aim to be the solution in more than just a business capacity. We believe it is our privilege and responsibility to help others where we can, and we will have fun whilst doing it. Here’s how.

Supporting Charity

Andy’s Man Club started off in Halifax, offering a free talking group for men, challenging the stigmas around male mental health. Andy’s man club now have 69 clubs across the UK, and they continue to grow. We wanted to support the amazing work this charity does for men across the UK, and encourage more men to get talking about their mental and physical health. In July 2022, some of the Ben Johnson team completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, and raised over £1000, the tough challenge consisted of 24 miles of walking over 12 hours.

Family Fund are a York-based charity and the largest of its kind providing grants for families right across the UK raising disabled or seriously ill children and young people. By providing grants for a wide range of items, from sensory toys to family breaks, Family Fund helps to alleviate the emotional, physical and financial burdens faced by families, breaking down barriers and improving their quality of life. This year, our team took part in Tough Mudder raising £1200 for the charity. For the full story see our article here

Other Charities we support

We have been collecting for York Foodbank since 2016 and began volunteering as a team in 2017. St Leonard’s is another charity that is close to our hearts. As a local hospice, most of our team members have been touched by the caring service this wonderful place provides in one way or another. We support them regularly in a number of ways through taking part in their annual “It’s a Knockout” competition. Additionally, Ben Johnson regularly take part in industry charity events such as the UKREiiF Sportif bike ride in May 2023, supporting Yorkshire Children’s Charity.

Protecting the Environment

As a business we are committed to recycling as much of our everyday waste as we possibly can.

As part of our ISO14001 accreditation we are focussed on six key areas:

1. Sustainable Sourcing

We ensure our supplier partners and manufacturers are accredited to the ISO14001 environmental standards or equivalent, adopting cradle to cradle and upcycling strategies within their supply chains. We operate a point system based on suppliers environmental credentials, which helps our designers and estimators ensure the best sustainable solutions.

2. It’s in our DNA

Everyone at Ben Johnson is involved with ultimate accountability at board level. From environmental litter collection initiatives, to charitable fund raising events, our team are encouraged to get involved throughout the year in our environmental and socially responsible initiatives.

3. Travel and Transport

Where possible, cloud based video conferencing is used for both internal and external communications. Where travel is unavoidable, car share and use of public transport is encouraged. We also have the subsided ‘cycle to work’ scheme in place.

4. Energy and Efficiency

We closely monitor our energy consumption to identify opportunities where usage can be reduced. Examples include the promotion of intelligent lighting and heating systems and waterless urinals.

5. Staff Wellbeing

Our staff’s health and wellbeing are extremely important to us, we operate a range of initiatives including providing daily fruit in the office, flexible working hours, promoting walking and exercise opportunities near our office locations and bike to work schemes. We also offer a private healthcare scheme internally for all of our staff.

6. Monitoring

We carry out regular reviews to ensure all of our offices and project sites still comply with the environmental policy to ensure continual improvement in environmental performance and targets, which are set on a yearly basis.

What is the Carbon Footprint of my furniture and fit-out project?

We strongly believe in minimising the environmental impact associated with our fit-out and furniture supply chain. During the design process, your scheme will be designed with environmental souring and procurement in mind. In terms of commercial furniture and fit-out, all of our suppliers are ISO14001 accredited, and to support your carbon neutral business strategy, your interiors consultant can provide you with an ESG sheet for every supplier used on your project.

We also offer a furniture recycling service, either helping our clients donate furniture to a local charity, upcycling the furniture for reuse within a new scheme or, as a last resort, recycling the furniture in an ethical way.

In terms of our fit-out sites, all of our waste is recycled and we work with our partners to dispose of products in an ethical manner, avoiding landfill where possible. All materials sent to landfill are monitored on a regular basis, and we are 100% committed to waste reduction.
