The Brief

Equifax approached three design and build companies to tender for the expansion of their Leeds office. Each was asked to plan a 15,000 sq ft workspace over one and a half floors at Wellington Place, Leeds. The design had to provide 174 workstations; a choice of informal breakout areas; kitchen breakout; and meeting rooms with good acoustics and AV provision. The design had to be aligned with the existing interior but was also to respond to the technology team’s specific requirement for more flexible meeting and project spaces.

The Solution

Ben Johnson Interiors surveyed the existing workplace to gain a better understanding of the Equifax office requirements from the original fit-out.

The workstations consisted of bench and locker solutions to promote agile working. General storage was kept to a minimum because the technical teams were predominately paperless. Whiteboards were installed where possible.

A range of different size meeting rooms were provided, all double glazed fronts with manifestation. The rooms contained a mix of conventional furniture, as well as high tables and stools to facilitate different types of gathering and all offered the latest integrated AV technology and white boards. The chosen partitioning was specified in a black frame finish rather than the existing silver finish to give the new space a more modern vibe for the tech team.

A formal reception was not required, instead the team opted for a breakout/waiting area, screened from the main work areas by glazed partitioning to maintain the openness. Feature carpet gave this extra space a relaxed ambience.

The kitchen breakouts were in keeping with other Equifax offices in terms of specification and mixture of soft seating and dining furniture, all in Equifax brand colours

The new flexible project space could either be closed off or become part of the open plan area via bi-folding doors.

The furniture within the project space was also a flexible auditorium solution, a mix of flexible, stackable boxes that enabled different configurations, to create a variety of meeting settings from seminar space to project breakout space or training space. Click to see reconfiguration examples.

The project was delivered on a very tight timescale, on time and within budget.
